Skeletal indicators of locomotor adaptations in shrews

چکیده
The Soricidae (Mammalia: Eulypotyphla) comprises more than 450 species inhabiting a variety of habitats on five continents. As family, shrews employ locomotor modes that incorporate ambulatory, fossorial, aquatic, and scansorial behaviors, illustrating an ability to exploit natural substrates their associated resources. In this study, the association skeletal morphology three dominant in family—ambulatory, semi-fossorial, semi-aquatic behaviors—was investigated up 52 12 genera representing all subfamilies Soricidae. From measures, 34 morphological indices were calculated, most which have been used previously characterize substrate use among shrews, rodents, other mammals, analyzed for individual effectiveness discriminating locomotory modes. To assess combination, subsets using 1) mean percentile ranks, 2) first principal component from components analysis, 3) plots classifications discriminant function analyses. general, methods effectively identified grouped smaller subsets. Additional analyses then classify behaviors whose unknown or ambiguous. reinforce broaden scope observation wide range grades variation may permit equally diverse abilities

Cortical Structure of Hallucal Metatarsals and Locomotor Adaptations in Hominoids
Diaphyseal morphology of long bones, in part, reflects in vivo loads experienced during the lifetime of an individual. The first metatarsal, as a cornerstone structure of the foot, presumably expresses diaphyseal morphology that reflects loading history of the foot during stance phase of gait. Human feet differ substantially from those of other apes in terms of loading histories when comparing ...

Remarkable changes occur in the mammalian skeleton prior to, during and after the reproductive cycle. Skeletal changes occur with ovarian maturation and initiation of menses and estrus in adolescence, which may result in a greater accumulation of skeletal mineral in the female vs the male skeleton. There is also some evidence to suggest an excess skeletal mass in young female experimental anima...

The aim of this study was to examine the strategies used by human subjects to adapt their walking pattern to a velocity-dependent resistance applied against hip and knee movements. Subjects first walked on a treadmill with their lower limbs strapped to an exoskeletal robotic gait orthosis with no resistance against leg motions (null condition). Afterward, a velocity-dependent resistance was app...

Introduction The systems biological analysis of dynamic protein constellations and the determination of proteomewide alterations due to physiological adaptations play an increasing role in modern sports medicine. Several large-scale studies on the effect of physical training in humans and relevant animal models have decisively improved our global understanding of the molecular and cellular mech...
